Observation Narrative
One of the few examples of beech - sugar maple forest on the northern Blue Ridge. Plot is located in the more fertile downslope portion of the stand, where a more mixed canopy prevails, on northeast-facing slope above stream, ca. 0.1 mi northwest of Appalachian Trail crossing and 0.4 mi south of Berryville Reservoir. Several species would have much higher cover in aestival aspect: Impatiens pallida, Monarda clinopodia, Collinsonia canadensis and Solidago flexicaulis.
Trees measured in or just outside plot (dbh in cm): Tilia americana (68), Fraxinus americana (75, 55), Fagus grandifolia (52), Acer saccharum (62, 44, 43, 30), Liriodendron tulipifera (73), Carya ovalis (60).
