Observation Narrative
Small area of older hydric oaks with more or less intact field layer lacking Microstegium. The sample is not representative of entire stand, which, although the same community, is disturbed from logging event roughly 50 years ago. Regeneration is mostly Liquidambar styraciflua but a few hydric Oaks (Q. michauxii, Q. phellos, Q. pagoda, Q. laurifolia) remain scattered through stand. Microstegium is a clear and present threat to the integrity of the community, growing on hummocks, but is not in the wettest areas. Sample is representative of what the stand may succeed to if left undisturbed. Stand is structurally complex with much stratification. Area adjacent to sample is much younger and has admixture of Pines.
