Observation Narrative ? Plot located near northwest corner of ca. 1 ha patch of wet prairie / prairie fen in east-central portion of Cowbane Wet Prairie NAP, south of large Platanus occidentalis along hedgerow and just southeast of small dominance patch of Juncus balticus var. littoralis. Carex stricta is the overwhelming dominant here; to the west Carex trichocarpa becomes the most abundant sedge. According to Tom Wieboldt, C. trichocarpa has invaded or increased significantly in abundance in herbaceous wetlands in western Virginia in recent decades. At Cowbane it may have been favored by fire exclusion or past grazing. The recently discovered Hierochloe odorata abounds in this stand, probably with over 1000 fruiting individuals. This species appears confined to this wet prairie / prairie fen community and is absent from the calcareous spring marsh / muck fen to the west. [2013-06-17 GPF: Carex stricta was orginally determined as Carex emoryi; specimens were collected in May, 2013 and redetermined as C. stricta,]
