Observation Narrative
Plot captures a diverse and unusual assemblage of species, and dominance exhibits marked phenological shifts. Early in the growing season, Carex tetanica, Packera aurea, and Ranunculus hispidus var. hispidus (a rather bizarre occurrence of this chiefly upland variety, but flowering stems are distinctly upright and not prostrate) are the leading dominants. By October in the dry year of 1999, these taxa had senesced almost entirely, and Agrimonia parviflora, Setaria geniculata, and Symphyotrichum puniceum var. puniceum had the highest cover. Cover values reported are the higher of the values recorded. Plot is located south of large slough dominated by Acorus calamus.
Very dark, moist clay, with scattered fine organic matter; some lenses of oxidized clay present below 70 cm. Depth to water table is difficult to determine. Water may have risen in column, but significant moisture encountered at ca. 70 cm.
