Observation Narrative
Plot captures gradation in vegetation dominated by Caltha palustris, from codominance by Typha latifolia in the east end to that by Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani in the west. Flowering stems are Lysimachia quadriflora occur throughout plot. Layout was designed to minimize density of Salix eriocephala, which appears to be invading this portion of the preserve aggressively (in the absence of recent fire, perhaps). Salix density is much higher in a ca. 250 sq. m area between plot and extensive patch of Acorus calamus and north of the plot toward a permanent spring/seep adjacent to the hedgerow which feeds this slough. The local abundance of Typha may reflect eutrophication.
Plot located between dominance patches of Acorus and Juncus balticus var. littoralis and south of seepage zone dominated by Polygonum amphibium and patches of Iris and Typha. From edge of clump of Salix east of plot: 20 m @ 312 deg to corner 1.
