Observation Narrative
Juncus balticus var. littoralis is the overwhelming dominant in this patch, which is bare larger than 100 sq. m. Phalaris arundinacea is entirely absent, unlike in the similarly sized patch of Juncus to the east, near the largest zone of Acorus calamus at Cowbane. This patch is surrounded by and grades to calcareous spring marsh / muck fen (exhibiting a wet meadow phase) characterized by Carex trichocarpa and Carex stricta, but no obvious topographic feature or hydrologic discontinuity explains the abrupt compositional shift. One individual each of Fraxinus pennsylvanica and Cornus amomum present in plot. Slough to the south contains Acorus and Phalaris. [2013-06-17 GPF: Carex stricta was orginally determined as Carex emoryi; specimens were collected in May, 2013 and redetermined as C. stricta,]
0 - 15 - litter and undecomposed organic matter
15 - gray, gleyed clay, interspersed with some organic matter; by ca. 80 cm clay has become mixed with either siltier or more oxidized lenses; water table below 1 m
