Observation Narrative
No plot layout is ideal for this stand because of the irregular shape of a slough which plot attempts to capture. Consequently corner #2 falls in more upland microsite dominated by Carex trichocarpa and is generally uncharacteristic of the rest of the vegetation. Ground surface is completely dry in late July in the drought year of 1999. All three Fraxinus pennsylvanica individuals that have cover in plot are evidently stressed and have nearly dead crowns. Most of the foliage of these trees is displayed on epicormic branches. Phalaris arundinacea dominates the late-season aspect, which may be a function of an unusually low water table. Accumulation of sediment around bases of Phalaris clumps has generated slight hummock-and-hollow microtopography.
From flagged Fraxinus pennsylvanica (41 cm dbh): 1.5 m @225 deg to corner 1.
