Observation Narrative
Plot located in slough 10+ m wide and ca. 25 m "upstream" from plot COWB006P. Estimating cover of individual Carex species is difficult, but cover of both C. trichocarpa and C. stricta appears to exceed 25%. Patch of Rosa palustris adjoins plot on side between corners 1 and 2 but did not contribute cover within. On side between corners 1 and 4, vegetation grades along a hydrologic gradient into dominance by Carex stricta, with abundant Solidago. Slough is entirely dry at ground surface in early June. Soil pH is unusually low, but may reflect peat component. [2013-06-17 GPF: Carex stricta was orginally determined as Carex emoryi; specimens were collected in May, 2013 and redetermined as C. stricta,]
From corner 1: bearing of 135 deg to witness tree (Fraxinus pennsylvanica) for plot COWB006P and bearing of 94 deg to largest Platanus occidentalis along hedgerow.
0 - 1 - litter and other organic matter; depth ranges to 10 cm
1 - 35 - dark brown, very firm, moist but not at all wet clay, with mottles of oxidized material and relatively little organic matter
35 - darker, wet soil; still rich in clay but resembling
