Observation Narrative
This plot at the ecotone of upland and wetland is very rich in vascular plant species, 10 composites, 10 grasses, etc. Plants such as Lysimachia quadrifolia, Lythrum alatum, Filipendula rubra, Panicum virgatum, Pycnanthemum virginianum, Oxypolis rigidior, Andropogon gerardii and Lathyrus palustris allow this vegetation to be classified as wet prairie. An early summer inventory would no doubt reveal many more plant species here (e.g., Carex). The upslope portion of the plot supports mesic species while the lower slope section supports distinctly wetland species. This gradient is within a distance of 5 meters (the width of the plot).
Plot located along western edge of wetland, south of South River and Cowbane Wet Prairie Natural Area Preserve. A single Juniperus virginiana (ca. 2 m tall) stands in plot.
