Observation Narrative
This plot is located on the edge of the prairie-like wetland and is underlain by much lighter colored soils with higher sand content. Groundwater appears to remain below the surface for all, or almost all, of the growing season. The vegetation here is degraded by invading woody scrub (particularly Acer rubrum, Cornus amomum ssp. amomum, Rosa palustris and Salix nigra) and the presence of several problematic exotics (e.g., Lonicera japonica) and weedy natives (e.g., Solidago canadensis var. scabra). However, the wet mesic prairie plants Panicum virgatum var. virgatum, Sorghastrum nutans and Eryngium yuccifolium remain abundant and indicative that community conditions and viability are probably restorable through the use of prescribed fire to simulate the original natural disturbance regimes.
Plot located ca. 35 m south of Norfolk and Western Railroad tracks and 170 m WNW of Alcoa facility; centerline ends of plot marked with white PVC stakes.
