Plot location: peninsula between Potomac and Accokeek, ca. 1.0 miles NW of Crows Nest Point.
Field estimate from topo: (UTME): 297155 (UTMN): 4248209.
The vegetation of this ravine head is an old-age forest dominated by large-diameter Fagus grandifolia. The overwhelming dominance of this species is probably due, in part, to past selective logging that removed more desirable oaks. Some calcareous influence is evident in soil samples collected here, but dense shade (and possibly deer grazing) appears to limit herbaceous cover and diversity.
