Habitat is a west-facing, upper ravine slope with very infertile soils. A medium-age forest of mixed oaks (mostly Quercus montana, Q. velutina) with dense evergreen understory of Ilex opaca var. opaca and Kalmia latifolia covers the site. Young Fagus grandifolia is also common in the understory and may represent ongoing successional changes in the stand. This is a good example of a "Piedmont/ Coastal Plain Oak-Beech/Heath Forest" (= "Piedmont/Coastal Plain Heath Bluff" of Schafale and Weakley [1990] ).
