Observation Narrative
Plot location: wooded slope ca. 0.2 miles N of entrance to Conway- Robinson SF on US 29.
Field estimate from topo: (UTME): 275340 (UTMN): 4298488.
Rock Types Present: diabase boulders and stones.
Bouldery diabase debris is abundantly scattered over the entire slope in and near the plot. Exceptionally high Mn values in soil samples also attest to the basic substrate. Vegetation here is a very diverse dry-mesic oak-hickory forest with highly mixed woody layers and a rather sparse, patchy, but species-rich herb layer. This area is on the verge of a major gypsy moth outbreak.
