Observation Narrative
Plot location: Bluff on S side of James River floodplain, 0.2 miles W of Rt. 45 bridge at Cartersville.
The site is a north-facing river bluff with rocky but loamy, fertile soil. Vegetation is a lush, mixed hardwood forest with tall specimens of Tilia americana, Celtis occidentalis, Juglans nigra, Fraxinus americana, Ulmus rubra, and Liriodendron tulipifera forming a very mixed overstory. Blowdowns and crown damage contribute to a somewhat open canopy. Shade from a dense shrub layer (mostly Asimina triloba and Lindera benzoin) and prevalence of leafy, rhizomatous forbs (Hydrophyllum canadense, Podophyllum peltatum) probably contribute to relatively low herbaceous diversity.
