Observation Narrative
Plot location: just E of Willis River Forest Road at a point 0.2 km NW of bridge over Willis River.
A small, isolated, upland depression located within flatwoods along a sizeable diabase sill. Spheroidal diabase boulders are numerous on the ground surface in the adjacent upland forest. Vegetation is an open forest of Quercus phellos and some Liquidambar styraciflua, with much Smilax rotundifolia in the understory and patches of hydrophytic graminoids, particularly Carex typhina and Carex louisianica. Two old, shallow ditches run through the woods to a slope west of the depression. It is unclear whether these ditches influenced the hydrology of the wetland.
