Plot location: on ridge NW of the Willis River, 1.8 km SSE of Zion Church.
This site is part of a 16-acre tract of mature oak- hickory forest set aside by the Dept. of Forestry as the Turkey Ridge Natural Area in Cumberland State Forest. Soils of this site evidently have hardpan subsoils and larger overstory dominants of Quercus stellata, Q. alba, and Carya glabra have attained diameters greater than 60 cm DBH along with heights less than 30 m. This stand has a semi-closed canopy, open understory, and very dense herb layer dominated by the bunchgrass Piptochaetium avenaceum (ca.50% cover) and, to a lesser extent, the sedge Scleria oligantha (ca. 10% cover). This is an extraordinarily fine example of a Piedmont hardpan forest, a decidedly uncommon ecological community type, and it is fortunate that the Department of Forestry has seen fit to protect it.
