Observation Narrative
Plot located in a bottomland forest with mixed overstory of Quercus palustris, Liquidamber styraciflua, Platanus occidentalis, and Acer rubrum. The abundance of Quercus palustris in this sample is partly an artifact of plot placement. Carpinus caroliniana overwhelmingly dominates the understory and shrub layers, attaining exceedingly high stem densities. The habitat has irregular microtopography and is shallowly seasonally flooded in a few hollows; substantial, relatively well-drained hummocks and terraces are also present. Most herbs grow in the better drained soils; Poa autumnalis, Carex radiata, and Chasmanthium latifolium are most prominent.
