Observation Narrative
Plot location: 0.6 km NW of Willis River Forest Rd. bridge over the Willis River; plot is located < 50m north of road.
This plot is similar to plots CUSF002 and CUSF005. It is situated in nearly level upland "flatwoods", which appear to have a pronounced hardpan subsoil. Quercus stellata, Q. alba, Carya glabra, Fraxinus americana, Ulmus alata, Cercis canadensis, and Juniperus virginiana are characteristic woody species in the relatively short-statured (<25m tall overstory), dry, open forest. The herb layer is patchy but contains locally dense swards of Piptochaetium avenaceum, Scleria oligantha, and Danthonia spicata. This habitat was very dry on the date of sampling, but may become temporarily waterlogged during rainy periods. NOTE: THIS SITE WAS REVISITED MAY 22, 2001 AND FOUND TO COMPLETELY CLEAR-CUT.
