Observation Narrative
A small stand of Mountain / Piedmont Acidic Seepage Swamp is located adjacent to Pond 1 at Deep Run Pond NAP. Fingers of wetland soils appear to interdigitate with upland microsites; this mosaic seems to be related to complex dendritic drainage pattern on the essentially flat base of the alluvial fan west of the Blue Ridge. Vegetation contains a mixture of palustrine (e.g., Quercus palustris) and upland (Q. alba and apparently Q. rubra) species; composition is similar to but more diverse than that captured in plot DEEP002P. Microtopography is uneven but lacks well-defined hummocks and hollows. Several long downed trees, seemingly all pines, are present in modules 6 and 7 and outside plot toward trail, but there are no extant gaps in plot. Drainage channel running through plot was almost entirely dry by the end of the sampling period.
Plot marked with white rebar stakes.
0 - 2 - leaf litter (variably thick)
2 - 10 - O horizon: many fine roots
10 - 18 - loamy sand, varying in hue from light to dark gray
18 - sandy loam, somewhat finer textured, light to medium grayish brown; less organic matter
