Observation Narrative
The habitat is an isolated sandy island in the extensive baldcypress-gum-ash swamps along Dragon Run. Typical southeast sandhill plants such as Carya pallida (dominant), Quercus margarettiae, and Solidago tarda occur here, but in peculiar mixture with more nutrient-demanding species characteristic of basic or calcareous habitats. Among the latter are Carya cordiformis, Cercis canadensis var. canadensis, Aquilegia canadensis, Arabis laevigata var. laevigata, Erigeron pulchellus var. pulchellus, Solidago ulmifolia var. ulmifolia, (significantly disjunct from farther west), and Triosteum perfoliatum (not in plot). The source of soil nutrients supporting these species is ambiguous, but is probably related to underlying substrate conditions or geomorphic factors since the island is now too high in elevation to receive nutrient inputs from flooding.
