Observation Narrative
This stand appears to be a good example of maritime forest. Loblolly pine forms an emergent canopy over a deciduous hardwood subcanopy dominated by black oak and red maple. American holly and Cornus florida are common in the understory and tall shrub layers. The lower shrub layer and herb layer are sparse. Notably, Ilex vomitoria occurs sparingly in the low shrub layer. Stand has been logged for loblolly pine in the past (stumps present). The pines existing in the site today are probably 60-80 years old and are of harvestable size; some individuals appear to be overmature. Area slated for development - rights-of-way have already been cleared.
Trees measured: Pinus taeda 59.2 cm, Ilex opaca (outside plot) 32.0 cm.
