Observation Narrative
Plot located in the southern part of large upland depression swamp covering several acres in the northern Piedmont Culpeper (Triassic) Basin of Fairfax County. The site is underlain by diabase and soils have a very impermeable, plastic-clay hardpan. The sample area was about 30% ponded by shallow water on the survey date. The forest here is dominated by fairly large Quercus bicolor with some associated Quercus palustris; small-diameter Acer rubrum and Fraxinus pennsylvanica are common in the sub-canopy. Herb cover and overall species richness are quite low for this type of habitat.
