Observation Narrative
Plot located in the northern part of large upland depression swamp covering several acres in the northern Piedmont Culpeper (Triassic) Basin of Fairfax County. The site is underlain by diabase and soils have a very impermeable, plastic-clay hardpan. The sample area was about 30% ponded by shallow water on the survey date. The forest here is dominated by medium-diameter Quercus palustris with some associated Quercus bicolor; Ulmus americana and Viburnum prunifolium are the principal understory species. The herb layer is well developed, locally dense, and co-dominated by the graminoids Cinna arundinacea and Carex pellita.
