Observation Narrative
A lush oak-hickory forest growing on soil weathered from the Indian Run Formation, a metasedimentary melange with mafic and ultramafic clasts. Magnesium levels in soil samples collected from this site are rather high, suggesting the influence of basic substrates. Deer, along with the heavy grazing impacts seen in most northern Virginia forests, are absent from this urban park. As a result, the herb layer is well developed and vigorous, and most herbaceous species are robust.
