Observation Narrative
The plot is located on the upper part of a bouldery slope flanking Cub Run in the northern Piedmont Culpeper (Triassic) Basin of Fairfax County. Underlying bedrock is diabase, and the site is centered in a concavity at the head of a small ravine. Vegetation is an exceedingly species-rich and shrub-dense mixed oak-hickory forest that represents the most mesic variant of the stand on this site (see also plots FAIR022 and FAIR023, representing the more typical and drier variant nearby). Species whose presence and/or abundance is indicative of this more mesic condition include Asimina triloba, Carpinus caroliniana, Hamamelis virginiana, Carya cordiformis, Arisaema triphyllum, Sanguinaria canadensis, Collinsonia canadensis, and Podophyllum peltatum.
