Observation Narrative
Mixed hardwood forest, heavily dominated in the understory by Fagus grandifolia. Overstory composition is more mixed, with Fagus, Liriodendron, Betula lenta, Carya spp., and some Quercus spp. (but not in plot). The cover and vigor of herbaceous plants appears to be reduced by deer grazing and perhaps heavy shade. A number of spring ephemerals occur, but were only detected by a follow-up visit in April. An old gold mine is located a short distance up the Bullneck Run ravine. Slope opposite plot is much steeper with a conspicuous evergreen component of Tsuga canadensis and Kalmia latifolia.
