Observation Narrative
Oak-Beech/Heath Forest dominated by Quercus montana, Fagus grandifolia, and Kalmia latifolia in central portion of BLM Meadowood property. Surrounded by Mesic Mixed Hardwood Forest . Dominance by Quercus montana in this type in this area is somewhat unusual. Many Kalmia shrubs appear to be dying. Rock type present: Fluvial or marine terrace gravels (exposed at soil surface).
0-2 cm - deciduous leaf litter - marine terrace gravels on surface
2-5 cm - organic mat with humus and roots
5+ cm - light gray sand with yellow clay and quartzite gravels
