The plot is dominated by Q. alba and Q. montana in the canopy, Nyssa in the understory, and Gaylussacia in the herb layer. Clearing and encroaching pine seedlings/small trees from the nearby pine plantation threaten the quality of the plot. Canopy gaps exist regularly here in this oak/ericad forest and one contributes to the high Gaylussacia cover in the plot. Surrounding areas have more open canopies and fewer large trees.
