Observation Narrative
Plot location: Western floodplain of Accotink Creek, South of the Farrar Road Bridge.
This floodplain of Accotink Creek supports some nice trees but a rather disturbed understory. Lindera benzoin in the subcanopy/shrub layer has high cover in the forest around the plot, but overstory trees are smaller and more disturbed. Lonicera japonica and Microstegium are the dominant exotics that compromise this floodplain habitat. Habitat across on the east side of the creek is more mesic, with a nearly solid ground cover of Microsteguim. What appears to be a Quercus palustris is dead in the plot (DBH~20-25cm).
