Observation Narrative
Myrica pensylvanica is the dominant species in dry swales among rolling secondary dunes ca. 20 m behind crest of primary dune. Physiognomy is clearly influenced by salt spray and wind; crowns are low, rounded, and evidently molded by persistent wind action. These small shrub islands are surrounded by sparse herbaceous vegetation dominated by Panicum amarulum, Chrysopsis gossypina, and Uniola paniculata. Most Myrica stems > 1 m, but because of exceedingly high density, stems were not tallied. Several dead stems are present. Thick, low canopy may have obscured some taxa.
