Observation Narrative
Vegetation is transitional between closed maritime woodland dominated by Pinus taeda, Quercus virginiana, and Myrica cerifera, and very open, low dune scrub containing scattered clumps of Panicum amarulum, Dichanthelium dichotomum (sensu lato), and Hudsonia tomentosa. Here Quercus hemisphaerica occupies a narrow portion of the back dune. Unusual plot dimensions employed to minimize inclusion of bare sand.
0 - 1 - organic matter comprising primarily oak litter
1 - 10 - dry, white sand, with abundant fine roots
10 - 25 - darker gray to light brown, more fine-textured sand
25 - somewhat more moist sand
