Observation Narrative
Rolling secondary dunes support scattered clumps of low (generally <1 m) Quercus virginiana among patches of open sand with Hudsonia tomentosa, Dichanthelium dichotomum (sensu lato), Panicum amarulum, and Lechea minor. These small openings are scattered throughout the matrix of more closed pine-oak maritime dune woodland. They may have formed from localized "blow-outs" caused by storm events and are likely slow to succeed back to woodland. Plot located ca. 110 m from crest of primary dune.
