Observation Narrative
This wetland appears to have relatively stable water levels due to seepage inputs from the sand dune ridge directly to the east. Two distinct microhabitats are present for herbaceous species: (1) shallow water and saturated muck, where Saururus cernuus, Decodon verticillatus, Hydrocotyle verticillata, H. ranunculoides, Polygonum punctatum, Boehmeria cylindrica and Ludwigia palustris occur, and (2) tree hummocks. Species such as Cornus foemina, Arisaema triphyllum and Hydrocotyle ranunculoides indicate a slightly enhanced nutrient status.
The largest Nyssa biflora and Magnolia virginiana measure 46 and 37 cm dbh, respectively.
