Observation Narrative
A naturally open seepage swale, with a quaking peat substrate, about 60 m. long and 5-6 m. wide. Probably once a wet pine savanna, but altered hydrology due to heavy beaver activity in adjacent pond has killed all of the large pines. Further beaver flooding could inundate and destroy the habitat and its exemplary community.
Plot location: Seepage swale at the south edge of Beaver Pond adjoining and east of Meadow Creek Pond, Fort A. P. Hill. Note: GPS data provided by Nancy Van Alstine.
