Observation Narrative
Plot location: Near head of the South branch pf Peumansend Creek, ca. 0.4 miles NE of Broaddus.
An open canopy, sphagnous wetland created by beavers and now maintained by a combination of strong, harshly oligotrophic, lateral seepage and burning. There is little indication of rapid woody succession at present. Update 2007-07-05: not sure of the basis of the 1993 statement that this habitat was created by beavers. No evidence of beavers, site appears to be maintained by very frequent burning. Community condition much the same as in 1993 except that sapling Pinus taeda have invaded the most open portion. Drosera rotundifolia is phenomenally abundant here.
