Observation Narrative
This habitat supports groves of bald cypress, occurring here at its northern and eastern limits in VA, co-dominating with tuliptree, maple and black gum. Bald cypress is a most unusual component of this oligotrophic "seepage swamp" community type, usually preferring eutrophic, regularly inundated bottoms. Stands similar to that represented by the plot at one time stretched for at least 0.25 mi. along this branch. Extensive beaver activity, however, has destroyed much of the habitat and resulted in fragmentation of the community. In and around the old beaver ponds, old knees of and thousands of young saplings attest to the bald cypress' persistence at the site. Trees measured (dbh in cm.): Taxodium distichum (70, 55).
Plot location: Stream bottom along head of the north branch of Peumansend Creek, 1.0 miles north of Broaddus.
