Observation Narrative
Plot location: forested hillside 0.3 mi. SSW of Byrd Grove Church.
The habitat is a west-facing hillslope with extremely acidic, infertile soils. The vegetation here is a mixed Pinus strobus - Quercus spp. forest with locally dense shrub thickets of Kalmia latifolia. This contrasts sharply with the mixed oak / all-deciduous ericad forest of the east-facing slope of the hill. This stand has recovered from selective logging in 1938, and again (very light) in the 1960's. NOTE: this site is on property owned by the investigator and its land-use history has been researched. This is part of a five-plot transect (plots FLUV001-FLUV004 and FLUV007) that crosses a low hill and associated variation in forest composition.
