Observation Narrative
The vegetation in this plot is characteristic of the more natural, fire influenced communities in which Rhus michauxii thrives in Virginia. The habitat is a rather mesic, lower slope woodland which has not burned in 2+ years. As a result, the herbaceous layer has become dense with sprouts of Liquidambar (sweetgum) and a number of shade loving mesophytes have become established. If not burned in near future, a decline of Rhus michauxii and light demanding grasses such as Schizachyrium scoparium can be expected.
