Observation Narrative ? Soils appear to be comparable to the most nutrient impoverished and stressful soils encountered at the mid-Atlantic serpentine barrens. The natural grasslands at this site are largely a function of surface water drainage, the lateral flow presumably leaches the soil and plant life is exposed to gravelly mineral soils. Ultramafic rock such as this evidently yields negligible clay minerals. Consequently, soils are highly erosive and very much prone to drought. Surface rock and gravel result.
