Observation Narrative
Plot location: along Grassy Fork just S of Rt. 619; plot within sight of road.
Rock Types Present: primarily mica schist and biotite gneiss.
A classic, forested "seepage swamp" along a small, headwaters stream. Drainage is braided and diffuse, resulting in hummock-and-hollow microtopography supporting a variety of mesophytic and wetland species. The vegetation contains both montane species (e.g., Saxifraga micranthidifolia, Solidago patula var. patula) and species more characteristic of Coastal Plain and eastern Piedmont lowlands (e.g., Viburnum nudum var. nudum).
