Observation Narrative
Upland flat just S. of "Uptons's Road". Dry Oak / Heath forest on flat hilltop. Canopy is mostly Quercus alba with Quercus coccinea, Quercus velutina, and lesser amounts of Liriodendron tulipifera. Subcanopy and tall shrub layer is largely Cornus florida (many dead) and Ilex opaca. Very open short shrub/herb layers. Little or no herb cover - probably lower than earlier in season, but not significantly. Droughty soils. Euonymus americana is heavily deer-browsed. This forest grades into more mesic forest downslope on all sides with more Liriodendron.
This stand is typical of upland forests in this section of the Park. Orwick and Abrams called this stand #17, "a 33 acre oak stand originating from 1915".
