Observation Narrative
Similar to plot FSMP018 and one of a series of stands of oak-dominated, saturated forest that occupy an extensive, low flat north of Lee Drive in Fredericksburg-Spotsylvania National Military Park. Located right on the inner edge of the Coastal Plain, this site probably represents a former (Pleistocene?) base level of the Rappahannock River, which is located ca. 2.0 km to the northeast. The site does not flood from overland flow, but is saturated by perched groundwater for a significant portion of the year. The vegetation is an exemplary hydrophytic oak forest dominated by Quercus michauxii and Q. phellos, and containing a mixture of "swamp" and "bog" species.
