Observation Narrative
Plot location: ca. 50 meters east of Myrtle Ditch and 0.1 miles north of VA/ NC line. Great Dismal Swamp NWR.
Hummock and hollow microtopography.
Nutrient Regime: Oligotrophic.
Vegetation here is an impenetrable, pocosin-like woodland with 30 to 40-year old Pinus serotina forming an open stand over a dense shrub complex of Lyonia lucida, Ilex glabra, Smilax laurifolia, Ilex coriacea, and Clethra alnifolia. An artificial opening, cleared to obtain a peat core during a study of millenium-long fire and vegetation histories commisssioned by DCR-DNH, occupies about 22 sq. m. of the plot. Buried and partly exposed Chamaecyparis logs, as well as the pollen record in the peaqt core, indicate a shift at this site from white-cedar to pocosin vegetaion from the very late pre-settlement through post-settlement time period. The change also correlates with a shift from low charcoal levels to consistently high charcoal levels through the same period.
