Observation Narrative
Plot location: ca. 120m. East of Jericho Ditch at a wooden footbridge 0.4 miles NW of jct. With Jericho Ditch Lane and Hudnell Ditch. Great Dismal Swamp NWR.
Plot is located on the edge of a "mesic island" in the Great Dismal Swamp and represents mixed hardwood vegetation in which hydrophytic oaks (Quercus michauxii, Q. pagoda, Q. laurifolia) are prominent. Unlike most of the Swamp, the habitat here is characterized by loamy mineral soil instead of peat, and is not seasonally flooded (except for local shallow surface ponding) but saturated by a perched water table. Adjacent to the plot is an area containing many impressively large and old trees (e.g. a Quercus pagoda 134 cm dbh) and an enormous population of the globally rare plant Trillium pusillum var. virginianum. Elsewhere, as in this plot, Liquidambar styraciflua and Acer rubrum are more abundant in younger stands which followed heavy logging.
