Observation Narrative
Plot location: ca. 30 meters east of Lynn Ditch at a point 0.1 miles north of jct with Washington Sitch. Great Dismal Swamp NWR.
Soil sample extracted from a slight depression.
A non-riverine, seasonally flooded swamp on a plastic clay mineral soil. Although the dominant canopy tree here is Nyssa aquatica, a species well adapted to prolonged flooding, the prevalence of more hydro-mesophytic species such as Vitis rotundifolia, Clethra alnifolia, Woodwardia areolata, and Dryopteris celsa suggests that the hydrology may have been altered by ditching and other disturbances.
