Observation Narrative
Plot location: ca. 0.25 miles ESE of Desert Road at Moss Swamp Bridge. Great Dismal Swamp NWR.
NOTE: Shallow surface ponding locally after heavy rains or during wet periods.
This plot documents a non-riverine mixed hardwood forest ocurring on saturated mineral soil near the western edge of the Great Dismal Swamp. Forest vegetation here is a relatively nice, older stand with oaks (Quercus michauxii and Q. laurifolia) in the 60-70 cm dbh range. On an adjacent, slightly higher "island" in the swamp, this community grades into a terrestrial Fagus grandifolia - Quercus alba forest.
