Observation Narrative
Plot location: ca. 100 meters south of Hudnell Ditch Road at a point 0.35 miles west of juction with New Ditch Road. Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge.
Slight hummock and hollow microtopgraphy.
Nutrient Regime: Oligotrophic.
NOTE: Hollows temporarily ponded during wet periods.
Vegetation here is apparently a fire suppressed pond pine woodland or pocosin. Plants characteristic of these community types - Pinus serotina, Lyonia lucida, Ilex glabra, and Smilax laurifolia - are still prominent, but Acer rubrum and Clethra alnifolia are now abundant and light levels are reduced by significant canopy closure.
