Plot location: ca. 0.2 miles west of west end of track radio antenna and 0.3 miles north of NC line, 2.4 miles south of jct. Ballahack and Bunch Walnuts Roads.
Very slight hummock and hollow microtopography.
An exceptional, mature stand of mixed hardwood forest with large, impressive specimens of Quercus michauxii, Q. nigra, and Q. laurifolia. Carpinus caroliniana is the dominant small tree/shrub, while the evergreen ericad Leucothoe axillaris forms extensive patches ca. 0.5meters high. The habitat is a poorly drained, non-riverine flat located on a long, eastern lobe of the Great Dismal Swamp.
