Observation Narrative
Plot situated on a bedrock shore of the Potomac River just below the low-water dam above Great Falls. According to GPS data, this plot falls right on the VA/MD state line, and may be partly or wholly in Maryland. Vegetation is a woodland of flood-battered, scrubby trees. Herbaceous plants occupy heterogeneous microhabitats, including xeric bedrock crevices, muck and water-filled hollows, and deeper deposits of sandy soil. .
Soil is very heterogeneous: clay-rich muck in hollows, sandy on upper edge of plot, local gravelly soils in rock crevices

Minor to powerful floods impact this habitat at least annually. A low-water dam (part of a water intake facility) is located just upstream, but probably has little effect on the natural flooding regime.
