Observation Narrative
A one-acre, largely herbaceous, boggy seepage wetland (Southern Appalachian "bog") with scattered to patchy shrub thickets. Dominant here are Carex gynandra, Eriophorum virginicum, Juncus subcaudatus var. subcaudatus, Osmunda cinnamomea, Rhynchospora capitellata, Solidago rugosa ssp. aspera and Viola macloskeyi ssp. pallens. A few small seedlings and small saplings of Abies fraseri occur near the lower elevation limits of the species. At present there are few signs of succession in the wetland, as specimens of most of the potential tree successors appear weak and unthrifty. This is a very rare community type in Virginia and also perhaps globally.
Plot located near northern park boundary, in a mostly open boggy swale just south of and visible from the Appalachian Trail at a point ca. 0.15 mi southwest of bridge over Big Wilson Creek.
